I’m Shadd Johnson, and as a husband and father, I understand how important it is to create a space that’s not just a house, but a home filled with memories and love.

Growing up in the construction industry and then settling in the beautiful landscapes of Utah, I’ve always had a passion for designing homes that blend functionality with artistic elegance. I started this firm with a simple belief: every home should reflect the unique vision and lifestyle of its owner. No cookie-cutter designs here—we work closely with you to craft a home that’s as unique as your family.

At Shadd Johnson Design, we’re not just about blueprints and floor plans. We’re about listening to your dreams, understanding your needs, and turning that into a space where your family can grow and thrive. We know that starting a home-building project can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to guide you every step of the way. After all, I get it—I have a family too, and I want the best for them just like you do for yours.

Shadd

Shadd - owner / founder

Shadd is a third generation professional in the construction industry. Following in the footsteps of his father & grandfather, Shadd entered the business in his teens as a framing assistant and worked his way up to a project manager before going to college. After completing a degree at ITT Tech in Drafting Design, he worked at several structural engineering firms before starting Shadd Johnson Design LLC to follow his passion in designing dream homes.

Nate

Nate - drafter/social media

Nate is one of our draftsmen here at SJD. He studied Business Management at Idaho State University. Along with his experience with project management, Nate enjoys turning ideas into reality. He loves focusing on the fine details that makes a house feel like a home. He enjoys being a team player and will make sure that your voice is heard throughout the entire project .

Our Design Process

There are 6 stages of the design process. They are Schematic, Design Development, Final Review, Construction Documents, and Finally Construction Phase. Let us explain all the phases and what to expect from us at each phase.

Schematic Design Phase

We will do your initial complimentary call/zoom meeting where we will go over your overall design. We talk about your needs vs wants, square footage, bedrooms, bathrooms etc. At this time we will also provide you with a price estimate based on your design requirements. Whether you are in the Utah county area or abroad we will gladly help you.

Contracts are sent over and signed.

Design Development Phase

During this phase we will take what we started with in the Schematic Phase. As we go through this we will be updating you on a regular basis, at least once a week. During this time we are adding doors, windows, and roof lines. We are always going back and forth with you during this stage to get all your thoughts out of your head and on to paper. This is a great time to share your pinterest book with us, even though we hate the “P” word. We would encourage you at this stage to start talking with contractors and hopefully pick one. It’s nice to have one on bored to start getting rough numbers.

Design Development Phase

During this phase we will take what we started with in the Schematic Phase. As we go through this we will be updating you on a regular basis, at least once a week. Final Review and off to Engineering

This stage in the game we should have all your ideas and thoughts out of your head and on to paper. While we send this out to engineering we will be finishing up the last little bit of the design that is needed during the Construction document phase. As we finish up things on our side the engineer is doing their thing. We plan the timing for these two to finish at the same time or within a day or two of each other.

Construction Document Phase

We will be creating the building sections, and electrical plans. If your design requires any special details we will be creating them. During this whole process we are always making sure that the design still fits on your lot and its requirements. By doing this, we are now able to create your site plan to show all the items that the city/county are going to require. As we develop these last bit of drawings you should be interviewing contractors, if you haven’t picked one out by this point.

Construction Phase

Just because we finish your drawings doesn’t mean that you are done with us. We will help you during the build process of the home that we put together. If there are changes that need to be made we will provide them. We will review all structural shop drawings submitted through the general contractor, truss drawings. We will also provide several site visits at appropriate times to ensure that everything that you wanted is being built correctly.
