The Nodia – A Modern Architectural Gem in Mapleton, Utah
Overview
The Nodia is a modern-style custom home located in Mapleton, Utah, completed in 2023 by Green Tech Construction. Designed by Shadd Johnson Design, this six-bedroom, five and a half bathroom residence was tailored to the specific desires of clients relocating from California. After touring a previous version of The Nodia, the clients requested modifications to suit their preferences, resulting in a home that combines open-concept living with unique features like expansive glass handrails, a floating master bathroom vanity, and an abundance of natural light through extensive window installations.

- The pantry is doorless, visible from the kitchen for easy access.
- Includes a small “Costco door” connecting directly to the garage, facilitating convenient transfer of groceries from car to pantry.

- At the client’s request for a modern handrail without vertical posts, the team sourced View-Rail‘s pin system from Indiana.
- Installed 267 linear feet of glass handrail on interior stairs and exterior balconies, using panes of glass secured with up to six pins per pane.
- Windows:
- The home features numerous windows throughout, enhancing natural light and the modern aesthetic.

Challenges and Solutions:
- Foundation Adjustments:
- Challenge: Initial excavation revealed the need for 12-foot basement foundation walls due to site conditions.
- Solution: To avoid excessively tall foundation walls, the team brought in engineered fill to raise the ground level. This allowed the use of standard 10-foot foundation walls while ensuring structural integrity.
- Handrail Design:
- Challenge: The client desired a handrail without traditional vertical posts, requiring a unique solution close to the drywall phase.
- Solution: Discovered View-Rail’s pin system, which met the aesthetic requirements. Coordinated quickly with the company to implement the glass handrail system effectively.
Outcome
The Nodia successfully fulfilled the clients’ vision of a modern, light-filled home customized to their preferences. The collaboration between Shadd Johnson Design, the interior designer, and Green Tech Construction resulted in a residence that balances aesthetic appeal with functional living spaces. The use of innovative products like the View-Rail glass handrail system and the inclusion of thoughtful features such as the Costco door and the safe room demonstrate the team’s commitment to meeting client needs through creative solutions.
